Giving evidence to the Lords Committee on Communications, Alan
Rusbridger (editor of the Guardian) criticised the Press Complaints Commission on account of its acting more as a mediator than a regulator. The criticism is an interesting one as it highlights simultaneously the key advantage and limitation of the system of self-regulation. Unfortunately, the detail of his comment has not yet been posted on the Committee's webpage, but latterly he has been heard nonetheless to
call for the continuation of disparate schemes of regulation of press and broadcasting.
